Where No Man Has Chessed Before

Many Kickstarter projects are filling voids in the market that we never knew existed. Some test out new technology, others revive old genres that have become difficult to fund, but the really special ones push the boundaries of what we previously thought was possible.

None more so than Kenneth’s THE TOWER: DIY-3D CHESS SET KIT.

Those familiar with 3D chess are probably aware that some variants call for three boards and others for five or six, but Kenneth doesn’t seem to have been satisfied by that. His project offers EIGHT boards that swivel around a central pole – so exciting that it called for DRAMATIC BACKGROUND MUSIC:

I love everything about this project. I love the brief pause before Kenneth starts talking. I love the precarious nature of the boards. I love the close-ups of boards swiveling and almost knocking over the king (but not the queen). I love his project write-up (“Don’t want to play on an 8 X 8 board, want to use a board of your own design, don’t want to play chess at all – hell, don’t.”) and the fact that the ads at the bottom of his retro homepage are overlapping.

Kenneth truly embodies the entrepreneurial Kickstarter spirit. However, in his attempts to boldly chess where no man has chessed before, I feel like he may discover that the market for 3D chess is, sadly, not all that large.

Both well written and true. I think that there is a lot of that going around. Check out the steampunk guide to sex that went up a few hours ago for supporting evidence.
